World First Aid Day 2018
The second Saturday in September is widely acknowledged as “World First Aid Day”. This global awareness day was developed by The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IRFC)* and was first introduced in the year 2000. The IRFC are one of the world’s leading first aid providers and their website states “first aid is a humanitarian act that should be accessible to all...with first aid skills volunteers and communities are empowered to save lives without discrimination.”
Now in its 19th year, World First Aid Day aims to raise awareness of how first aid can save lives and this year takes place on Saturday 8th September. An awareness of the benefits of first aid applies to both every day and crisis situations and the IRFC state “first aid is not a replacement for emergency services. It is a vital initial step for providing effective and swift action that helps to reduce serious injuries and improve the chances of survival.”
This year’s theme for World First Aid Day is First Response to Road Crashes. Statistics published by the IRFC in relation to this theme include the following…
- Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among young people aged between 15 and 29 years
- Road traffic injuries claim more than 1.34 million lives each year and have a huge impact on health and development
- Road traffic crashes rank as the 9th leading cause of death and account for 2.2% of all deaths globally, and are predicted to become the seventh leading cause of death by 2030.
These statistics indicate how vitally important it is for road users to be appropriately prepared for injuries and illnesses whilst driving. First Aid 4 Less can help drivers to be as safe as possible thanks to a wide range of vehicle first aid kits.
