As Queen once sang... "I Want to Ride My Bicycle” and now you will! You’ve been brave & signed yourself up for one of the mammoth London-Brighton Bicycle Rides. Well done!

Various London-Brighton races for different charities are taking place over the next few months. The race is around fifty miles and the ride is set along beautiful countryside, making it a brilliant & rewarding day for everyone, albeit a little challenging!

With bravery comes training and we’ve made a list of our top tips to help you achieve a great race:

1. Is your bike in good nick?
Before every training session give your bike a once over. You want your bike to be in the best working condition before setting off. Make sure you oil your gears, checking your brake pads and your tyres.

2. Storage
You will need storage, so best to buy a handy light-weight bag for your back.

3. H20
Best to take at least two bottles of water, then you can refill on route when needed. Try your best to drink every 20 minutes so you're always hydrated.

4. Energy drinks
Take an energy drink with electrolytes for replacing salt whilst you sweat.

5. Don’t forget to eat
Take food with you and eat little and often. Dried fruit, energy bars & bananas are brilliant for giving you a boost of energy. Stash them in your bag and try and eat every 30 minutes, you will thank yourself for it later.

6. Take waterproofs
Do you want to get wet? No, it’s not nice to be soggy whilst riding. Take some waterproofs and stay clear from wearing jeans.

7. Puncture repair kit is a must
Always be prepared for a puncture. If you don’t know how to change a tube, or pump up a tyre, learn fast!

8. First Aid
Take a small first aid kit, such as FirstAid4Less’s Lifesystems Adventurer Kit for only £12.75. It’s small enough to pop into your bag but it still has all the first aid you need to deal with any cuts or scrapes.

9 Wear padded shorts
The will be more comfortable, trust us. They will make your ride much more enjoyable.

10. Have beetroot juice the week before
Beetroot juice is a natural source of nitrates and it can really boost your stamina. Try drinking a glass or two the week before a big training session and race. If you can’t quite stomach the juice, opt for a whole beetroot, once a day.

We hope our top tips help you along the way with your training & big race. Remember to stock up on your first aid from FirstAid4Less today, you can’t ride if you’re injured!

Fri, 12 Apr 2013 12:14:39 BST www.firstaid4less.co.uk http://www.firstaid4less.co.uk/blog/90-The-Science-Behind-Marathon-Recovery.html <![CDATA[The Science Behind Marathon Recovery]]>

Only 11 days till the big day... the London Marathon!

So you’ve done the training, you feel ready and can’t wait to get going! Have you thought about after the race? If you think you’ve finished, think again! Believe it or not there is a science behind recovering from a marathon, but don’t worry its easy!

What you do immediately after the marathon is important, here are a few tips to help you along the way:

1. Keep Moving. When you finish the race, don’t sit down and chill out. The best thing to do is to keep moving. If you stop you might get light-headed this is because your blood pressure drops too rapidly when you suddenly stop moving. Once you've crossed the finish line, slow down to a very easy jog or walk; this gives your body some time to normalize.

2. Put Your Feet Up. Marathons can obviously lead to muscle soreness due to fluid build up, so after you’ve stopped moving its best to keep your legs elevated to help alleviate soreness.

3. Get a Massage... but not right away. You'll want a massage to get rid of the aches and pain. Our advice is to book one in but wait a while, because it you get one straight it will probably be more painful than helpful.

4. Keep Cool. Your legs need to be kept cool after the marathon to reduce pain and inflammation. This gives them a chance to begin the repair process. Lots of people have cold baths & showers to help refresh legs. If you are suffering from pains in certain areas then use ice packs on the muscle such as FirstAid4Less’s Koolpak Reusable Physio Gel Packs which tackle acute or chronic injuries. Buy yours here from as little as £4.10.

5. Avoid Heat. The worst thing you can do after a marathon is sit in a hot bath it will cause additional swelling and inflammation and the pain will get worse. Wait a few days then contrast therapy is advised. This is when you apply hot/cold/hot/cold therapy to your pain. This can be done using Koolpak Reusable Physio Gel Packs, by placing one in the microwave and one in the freezer. Buy yours here from as little as £4.10.

6. Get Lots of Rest. Once the buzz after the race starts slipping you will be shattered so go and get some rest!

7. Eat Healthy Carbs. You will need lots of carbs after your race as your muscles have experienced massive glycogen depletion. So make sure you eat lots of healthy carbohydrates!

8. Get Rehydrated Now. Drinks lots after the race. Start with water then move onto fruit juices so you can get lots of vitamins and minerals inside you! Stay clear of sugary soft drinks.

9. First Aid is Key. Stock up on your first aid supplies to take care of any blisters or bruises. You don’t want any horrid infections ruining your recovery progress so be hygienic and make sure you have a fully stocked first aid kit at hand. FirstAid4Less sell a Run On Sports First Aid Kit from as little as £26.90. This has everything you need for your sporting injuries!

10. Stretch. You will be feeling a bit stiff, so you may want to do some stretching. The main thing to think about is, be gentle! If anything hurts – stop, wait then try again later.

Remember to stock up all your first aid for when you have completed your marathon. FirstAid4Less are here to help you through every stage of your recovery.

Do you think CPR is just for humans? Well if so, you can think again. In this unusual story from Australia it sees a lady giving CPR on a... pigeon!

Gail Daniell really loves animals and has cared for over 50 in her life. She especially loves birds so much so, that when an injured pigeon stopped breathing, she didn’t think twice before administering CPR. She has now named the little pigeon Dennis after Dennis the Menace.

“Denis just stopped breathing and I didn't even think twice, I just started with the CPR," Ms Daniell said.

"I gave him probably three or four little breaths and pumped his little chest a few times and he started to come back to life”.

Gail advised that she learnt CPR from a course she took 10 years ago. It just goes to show that learning CPR can be helpful and unforgettable once learnt. FirstAid4Less can help you be prepared with tools in case you need to perform CPR. Check out our First Aid Responders Pouch which contains vital tools to give hygienic yet life saving CPR, containing:

 • 1 x Resuscitation Face Shield
 • 1 x Sterile Wound Dressing
 • 2 x Antiseptic Wipes
 • 1 x Pair Latex Gloves
 • 10 x Assorted Sterile Plasters
 • 6 x Assorted Safety Pins
 • 1 x Whistle

Gail is now nursing Dennis better and hopes to release him into the wild once he is fully fit.

Always be prepared with FirstAid4Less.

Hands up if you’ve had a cold before? I’m assuming everyone has their hands up! Hands up if you’ve had the flu? Yes. Now lastly hands up if you’ve had man flu?

As we all know men don’t just suffer colds, a bad cold or even a flu, they suffer something much worse... man flu! Meanwhile women will continue heroically multitasking even though they’ve got the norovirus and a twisted ankle.

All jokes aside there is a growing amount of research claiming man flu is real*! Who’d of thought it! (Sorry for the backlash ladies!)

How to help prevent Man Flu:

Germs spread like wildfire. The best thing to do is to do is try and nip them in the bud before they spread.

 1. Hygiene is a must; wash hands regularly. Use Maxina Handwash from as low as £1.75 to keep bacteria at bay.
 2. If you’re out and about use Purell Antibacterial Hand Rub to keep your hands free for nasty germs. They come in pocket sized from as low as £1.15 to keep at hand at all times. I know they don’t seem very manly but you’ll thank us for it later!
 3. Keep surfaces free from germs. Albeit at work or in your home office, anything from a doorknob to your computer mouse can get covered in germs. Use Disinfectant Wipes from as low as £5.95 to help kill bacteria, viruses, yeasts and fungi, thus preventing them spreading.

Did you know?

Mushrooms- Mushrooms apparently feed your defences to fight off the flu – 100g a day will keep them impenetrable. Research at Tufts University* in the US found that they increase production of antiviral proteins that fight flu.

Oranges Two or three a day keep the doctor away: 200mg of vitamin C daily (two glasses of orange juice) reduces the duration of your flu symptoms by as much as 8%*.

Cheese- A study at the University of Turku in Finland* said that cheese offers protection by carrying immune-boosting bacteria around the body. So go ahead and eat some cheese, you’ve now got a great excuse to eat pizza!

Brazil nuts- Did you know according to University of Liverpool research* 100g of brazil nuts per day reduces your risk of viral infections.

To sum up ultimately it’s best to try and prevent even catching man flu but if you do least you now can say, it’s a real thing!
